A slipcover that fits like it was made for your chair takes ten minutes, a flexible tape measure, and writing down the right numbers in the right places. Most people get the width wrong because they measure the seat back instead of the widest point, which is usually the armrest padding or the front leg flare.
What You’ll Need

A flexible tape measure is the only tool that belongs in this job. The cloth or fiberglass kind from a sewing kit follows curves and seams without lifting off the surface, which matters because a slipcover has to travel the same path the fabric does. Rigid rulers and yardsticks will gap across rounded arms and cushioned backs, and every gap is a fraction of an inch lost that adds up wrong by the time you order.
The metal tape measures sold in hardware stores are built for straight lines and drywall. Some guides swear by them, but that stiffness works against you on a chair. The tape bows or you end up eyeballing the arc, and eyeballing is where half the bad fits start.
Give yourself about ten minutes and something to write on. A chair is not a large object, but the numbers add up fast, and trying to remember three measurements while you’re still holding the tape is another easy place to slip.

1. Measure the Width

The widest part of a chair is rarely where you expect it. On my own slipcover hunt, I laid the tape across the seat back first, a natural guess, and came up two inches short of what the sizing chart actually needed. The armrest padding, or sometimes the flare where the front legs meet the frame, usually wins out instead.
Run the tape from the outside edge of one arm or leg base straight across to the opposite side, keeping it level. Do not hug the curve of the upholstery; a straight line gives the number the cover pattern is built on. This width is the gatekeeper measurement for ready-made slipcovers. A cover that is too narrow here will not pull down far enough to fasten, no matter how forgiving the height or depth might be. Most brands build their small, medium, and large tiers around this single dimension, so an accurate read here saves the return trip to the post office.

2. Measure the Depth

Depth is the measurement most people rush and regret later. Run the tape from the rearmost edge of the backrest to the front edge of the seat, not in a forced straight line but following the actual curve of the chair. Most chairs have some sweep to the back or a rounded front cushion, and a slipcover that ignores that curve ends up fighting the fabric every time someone sits.
For chairs with a pronounced curvature to the back, start at the very top or bottom of that curve, whichever pushes farthest back, and let the tape travel the full path to the seat’s leading edge. The sources split on whether to measure from the top or bottom of the back curve; the right call depends on which point extends farther rearward on your specific chair, since that farthest point is what the cover has to clear.
If the seat overhangs the frame or the back tilts, the deepest point may not be where you expect. Kneel beside the chair and sight along the side to spot the true extremes. A cover 1–2 inches shorter than this total depth is fine for breathability on outdoor furniture, but for indoor slipcovers you want the full measurement or the back hem rides up.

3. Measure the Height

The tape measure wants to tilt. Hold it straight up from the floor to the highest point of the chair back, and keep it perfectly vertical. A slight angle adds inches that are not really there. Those extra inches become a slipcover that pools on the floor or rides up the frame after one wash.
For recliners, close the chair into its upright position first. That locked position gives the true highest point the back will reach in normal use. Measure from the top of that back down to just above the feet, and record the number in inches without rounding. The source pages disagree on whether to add a centimeter or two for padding; I skip it. A slipcover with a little room to settle looks better than one that strains at the seams.

4. Measure the Seat

The seat is where most slipcovers either hug right or fight you, so three numbers matter here. Width runs between the inner edges of the armrests, not the full outside span; that open sitting space is what the cover actually has to wrap. Depth goes from the front of the cushion straight back to where the seat meets the backrest. For height, measure from the top of the seat cushion up to the top of the backrest, padding and all. These three are the make-or-break dimensions for fitted and semi-fitted styles. A cover that lists a seat width range will land in the right neighborhood if you got that inner-arm span exact, but miss by two inches on depth and you’ll be tucking excess for an hour or staring at a skirt that floats.

5. Check the Arms

Armrest height is the measurement most people skip, then wonder why their slipcover pools at the wrists or rides up like a shrugged shoulder. The tape measure starts at the top of the seat cushion, not the frame beneath it, and runs straight up to the highest point of the armrest tip. Most ready-made slipcovers are built for a specific arm height range and will sag or strain if this number is off by more than an inch or two. A chair with low, barely-there arms needs a different cover entirely than one with tall, padded rests you can set a coffee cup on. Seat to armrest tip is the number to write down, because that vertical span determines whether the arm flaps hang flat or bunch.

6. Account for Curves and Padding

A bowed backrest looks graceful in the living room and then lies to your tape measure. The fabric path follows the outer curve, so the cover needs more width than a straight-across measurement suggests. The same thing happens with overstuffed cushions. They compress under the slipcover’s tension, which means a snug measurement taken while they sit fluffy will end up too loose once the cover settles in. Let the tape follow the seams and edges where the fabric will actually travel, not the shortest line your eyes see. Rounded arms are another trap. The front of an armrest often measures wider than where it meets the backrest, so one width reading at the wrong spot leaves you with bunched fabric or a cover that won’t pull over at all. Keep the tape flat against the surface and honest about every bump and swell.

7. Round Up and Record

Every measurement gets rounded up to the next whole number before it goes on the list. A 31.5 inch width becomes 32 inches, not 31. Slipcovers are sold in size ranges, not exact dimensions, and landing at the bottom of a range leaves no fabric to stretch over the shape of the chair. Rounding down is the mistake that turns a usable slipcover into a wrestling match you will not win.
The half-inch you are tempted to shave off is exactly what the manufacturer already built in. Their "medium" range assumes you measured generously, so the cover can pull tight and stay put. Give it less than that, and the elastic rides up or the ties gap at the corners.
I write each rounded number in a column on my phone notes, width first, then depth, then height, then seat. One line per measurement, labeled, so I am not decoding my own handwriting in the order form later. The extra thirty seconds of neat recording beats the two-week return window every time.

What Goes Wrong

A metal tape measure across a curved back looks precise and still lies. The straight edge bridges the dip, so the number you write down is longer than the chair actually is, and the slipcover arrives with a half-inch of slack that pools at the seam. I switched to a soft sewing tape after watching the same gap show up on two different chairs, and the difference was immediate.
The seat cushion is the part you sit on, so it feels like the part that matters most. But arms flare. On my first attempt I measured cushion to cushion, ordered the cover, and watched the fabric strain where the armrests widened by another three inches. Measure the widest point of the whole chair, not where you actually sit.
Foam that has been sat on for months is not the foam your slipcover needs to fit. I measured my dining chair after a long dinner party, pressed the cushion flat with my hand, and wrote down the compressed number. Two days later the cover wrinkled like a loose sock as the foam rebounded. Let the cushion rest, fluff it to full loft, then measure.
Rounding down saves a dollar and costs the whole job. A slipcover that fits exactly is a slipcover that fits like a wetsuit, showing every seam and tug of the frame underneath. Round up to the next inch. The extra fabric is what lets the drape look intentional instead of trapped.

Recliners and Barrel Chairs

Recliners force a choice most chairs do not. The cover has to fit both upright and fully reclined, or the fabric strains at the seams every time someone kicks back. Measure depth with the footrest closed first, then again at the maximum extension from the back edge to the tip of the footrest. A slipcover sized only for the upright position will ride up or split once the mechanism opens.
Barrel chairs flip the usual width check entirely. The widest point sits at the middle of the curved back, not across the arms where a standard wingback or Parsons chair would measure. Skip that mid-back reading and the cover arrives narrow by several inches, gaping at the sides or refusing to zip.
Both shapes suffer from thinner ready-made stock. A generic stretch cover might forgive a boxy club chair, but recliner mechanisms and continuous curves leave almost no room for error. The numbers you write down here matter more than they do for conventional silhouettes, because "close enough" usually is not.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure a chair for a slipcover?
Use a flexible cloth or fiberglass tape measure, not a metal one, and record width, depth, height, seat dimensions, and armrest height. Width runs across the widest outside point, depth follows the actual curve from back to front, and height goes straight up from the floor to the highest point of the back. A sewing tape follows the same path the slipcover fabric will travel, which rigid tools cannot do.
What if my chair has unique features?
Follow the seams and edges where the fabric will actually travel, not the shortest line you see. For bowed backs, let the tape trace the outer curve; for overstuffed cushions, fluff them to full loft before measuring so the cover does not end up too loose once the foam rebounds. Rounded arms often measure wider at the front than at the back, so check both spots.
Should I round my measurements?
Round every measurement up to the next whole number; 31.5 inches becomes 32, not 31. Slipcovers are sold in size ranges built on generous measurements, and landing at the bottom of a range leaves no fabric to stretch over the chair’s shape. Rounding down is what turns a usable cover into one that rides up or gaps at the corners.
